Jacket potatoes are delicious served with butter. The cook need only cut a large slab of butter, cut a slice into the potato and insert the butter where it will quickly melt. The butter is absorbed into the potato for a simple, tasty treat. Salt and pepper may be added to taste; some enjoy bacon sprinkles on this simplest of baked potatoes.
There are as many ideas for jacket potato toppings as there are jacket potatoes. Any jacket potato topping can be added with or without that initial slab of butter; however, the mixture of butter and topping flavor can make a simple dish truly decadent.
Jacket Potato Toppings With Mayonnaise
Both mayonnaise and salad cream can be used interchangeably. A drained can of tuna mixed with enough mayonnaise to moisten the tuna makes a rich, tasty baked potato topping. So does chicken mixed with mayonnaise (as in a chicken salad sandwich) or an egg salad topping. It takes less than five minutes to rustle up these toppings.
Coleslaw also makes a pleasant cold topping for a jacket potato, but in this case the butter should be left out. The dairy does not work well with the coleslaw's vinegar. Coleslaw with cheese is particularly tasty on a baked potato.
Baked Potato Toppings With Melted Cheese
Add a handful of shredded cheese to the jacket potato, then slather with warmed chili or baked beans. The heat of the beans turns the cheese into a molten, delightful mess that, due to its fat content, rounds out the baked potato into a more filling meal – it has protein, fat and carbohydrate.
A rather more avant-garde variant would be to use some kind of curry as a jacket potato topping. Curry and baked potatoes is certainly not traditional, especially not with cheese, but it does make for a truly delectable meal.
Cooked broccoli and cheese sauce also works beautifully as a jacket potato topping.
Cold Toppings for Jacket Potatoes
Cottage cheese is a lower-calorie topping that works rather well with jacket potatoes, and a mixture of tuna and canned corn gives a sweet, salad flavor to the potato. The tuna and corn mix can be also be served warm.
Some also enjoy sour cream or plain yogurt as a baked potato topping. A sprinkling of chopped chives or green onions can be added for extra flavor, or the sour cream may be mixed with fresh, chopped herbs. For a Mexican feel, try salsa and cooked, chilled black beans on the jacket potato.
